Chinese New Year Celebration

The celebration of Chinese New Year is a very colorful event. It falls on the first Full moon of the lunar calendar; so it varies between January 21st until the 19th of February. This is the event of family celebration; wherein dinner is prepared and shared on the eve of Chinese New Year.

It has been part of the Chinese New Year celebration that members of the family would wear red. In this occasion you would even see children wearing the lucky color red; traditional Chinese Dresses for girls called Cheongsam are worn by female adults and kids. While the male would also wear traditional Chinese outfit known as Qipao.

The Chinese New Year celebration is a strict family affair, even if a member of the family would not be able to attend the celebration, a seat is still reserved for the absent member of the family. However, as much as possible every member would attend the celebration of Chinese New Year. On the dinner table, you would normally find sticky rice cakes and sweets. These foods are part of the Chinese tradition. Rice cakes symbolize the togetherness of the family and the sweets represent happiness too.

The adults would give out red Lai-See envelopes with money in it; it represents wealth and prosperity. You would see little kids wearing the Traditional Chinese Dresses for girls and costumes fall in line and pay respect to adults as they receive the red Lai-See envelope with the smile on their little faces.

Firecrackers are lit during the Chinese New Year celebration; it is believed that it will help drive away the evil spirits. Lion dance is also seen on the streets as part of the celebration; when a lion stopped in front of your house or business establishment you must feed the lion with the Lai-See envelope too. This will bring good luck and prosperity to your business.
